  • Temp contract for 4 months with possibility for extension & ongoing work

About the Role

Our client is a VIC government organisation based in the Melbourne CBD. They are currently seeking a Senior Payroll Specialist to come in and join their team on a 4 month temp contract with possibility for extension & ongoing work.

Candidates for this role must have:

  • Proven background managing full-cycle, business-as-usual (BAU) payroll processing.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with iChris or Chris21 (Essential).
  • Prior Victorian Public Sector (VPS) or broader government experience (Highly Desirable)
  • Proven leadership capabilities

Key responsibilities:

  • End-to End Payroll Processing: Manage the full-cycle fortnightly payroll process - including adjustments, onboardings, terminations, allowances, leave entitlements, and reconciliations - ensuring accurate delivery in accordance with the VPS Enterprise Agreement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Specialist Advice: Partner with HR Business Partners, leadership, and internal stakeholders to manage the Payroll Inbox, resolve complex queries, and provide authoritative advice on payroll policies and employment conditions.
  • Legislative & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to current employment legislation, taxation regulations, and superannuation requirements, actively monitoring and implementing regulatory updates as required.
  • Payroll Accounting & Reporting: Collect, analyse, and report on key employment data and HR metrics—including establishment reports, leave trends, and accrued leave liabilities - to support informed decision-making.
  • Period-End Obligations & Audit Preparedness: Assist the Payroll Manager with critical compliance tasks, including Single Touch Payroll (STP), payroll tax, superannuation guarantee contributions, agency portal management, month/year-end reconciliations, and audit readiness.
  • Continuous Improvement & System Testing: Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), data migrations, and post-implementation validation for system releases, while continuously updating and maintaining accurate payroll procedures and process documentation.
  • Operational Support & Leadership Backup: Provide high-level operational support and step in to cover duties for the Manager - Payroll Services during periods of leave or absence.
